RL2- Theme
Section 1/ Chapters 1-2 Pages 1-44
In section one the theme is individuality and being different. Meg is very un happy with her appearance and thinks she is different from everybody.
" She looked at herself in the wardrobe mirror and made a horrible face, barring a mouthful of teeth covered with braces. Automatically she pushed her glasses into position, ran her fingers through her hair mouse-brown hair, so that it stood wildly on the end, and let out a sigh almost as nosy as the wind." (L'Engle 10)
Section 2/Chapters 3-4 Pages 45-83
In this section the theme is love and friendship. Meg and Calvin are friends and she is starting to feel love towards him.
"Maybe we weren't meant to meet before this,' Calvin said, 'I mean , i knew who you were in school and everything, but i didn't know you. but i'm glad we've met now, Meg. we're going to be friends, you know."(L'Engle 45)
Section 3/Chapters 5-6 Pages 84-126
In this section the theme is Personal and Moral Responsibility. Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin are being transported to a different planet and are being left by their three friends, so they are on their own now.
"I can't stay with you here, you know,love,' she said. 'You three children will be on your own. We will be near you; we will be watching you. but we will not be able to come to you." (L'Engle 111)
Section 4/Chapters 7-8 Pages 127-158
In this section the theme is Deceptive Appearances. When Charles Wallace looks into the dark things eyes and becomes a different thing/person.
"Now the red eyes and light above seemed to bore into Charles, and again the pupils of the little boy's eyes contracted. When the final point of black was lost in blue turned away from the red eyes, looked at Meg, and smiled sweetly, but the smile was not Charles Wallace's smile." (L'Engle 146)
Section 5/Chapters 9-10 Pages 159-193
In this section the theme is Nonconformity. They are in the planet Camatoztz and everything/everyone is the same.
"But thats exactly what we have on Camazotz. Complete equality. Everybody exactly alike." "Alike and equal arent the samething at all!" (L'Engle 177)
Section 6/Chapters 11-12 Pages 194-232
In this section the theme is value of love. Meg has to go back to get Charles Wallace out of a trance so they can go home and she has to use her power of love go get him out and home.
"Charles. Charles, I love you. My baby brother who always takes care of me. Come back to me, Charles Wallace, come away from IT, come back, come home. I love you, Charles. Oh, Charles Wallace, I love you." (L'Engle 229)
