The tone in this story is very slow yet boring meaning the story is just starting. The author uses semi-dark and gloomy words. "It was a dark and stormy night.' 'In her attic bedroom Margaret Murry, wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, sat on the foot of her bed and watched the trees tossing in the frenzied lashing of the wind. Behind the trees clouds scudded frantically across the sky. Every few moments the moon ripped through them, creating wraithlike shadows that raced along the ground." (L'Engle 7)
Diction: The author uses very descriptive words to develop the setting and to make it interesting..
Section 2/Chapters 3-4 Pages 45-83
The tone of this section is more happy and full of friendship. The author talks about Calvin and Megs friendship. "Maybe we wen't meant to meet before the is.' Calvin said. 'i mean, i knew who you were in school and everything, but i didn't know you. but im glad we've met now, Meg. we're going to be friends you know." (L'Engle 45)
Diction-The author uses a "happy" or "happier" choice of words because thats what the characters are feeling..
Section 3/Chapters 5-6 Pages 84-126
The tone in this section is more serious. This is because they Mrs.W's dropped them off and lest them on this new Planet. "I can't stay with you here, you know, love,' she said. 'You three children will be on your own. We will be near you; we will be watching you. but we will not be able to come to you." (L'Engle 111)
Diction- The author goes into detail on the more serious parts. Like there is a part where they are going into the new planet.
Section 4/ Chapters 7-8 Pages 127-158
The tone in this section is more "mysterious" for a lack of a better word. It is because Charles Wallace is being pulled into a trance by IT. "Now the red eyes and light above seemed to bore into Charles, and again the pupils of the little boy's eyes contracted. When the final point of black was lost in blue turned away from the red eyes, looked at Meg, and smiled sweetly, but the smile was not Charles Wallace's smile." (L'Engle 146) Diction- This diction is very important because it shows that Charles Wallace is being gullible, It is taking advantage if him.
Section 5/Chapters 9-10 Pages 159-193
The Tone in this section is suffering. This is because the chapter is all about the planet Camazotz. "But thats exactly what we have on Camazotz. Complete equality. Everybody exactly alike." "Alike and equal arent the samething at all!" (L'Engle 177)
Diction- This shows that they are suffering because they are all the same because os IT.
Section 6/Chapters 11-12 Pages 194-232
The tone in this section is very loving. They have safely returned to earth. "Mr.Murry was running across the lawn, Mrs.murry running toward him,and they were in each other's arms, and then there was a tremendous happy jumble of arms and legs and hugging."
Diction- Diction is important to this section because it shows that they are very loving to each other and missed each other.
